Uranus's magnetic field was not measured until Voyager 2 flew by in 1986. Uranus's magnetic field is not as strong as Earth's. A magnetic field is produced by an electric current. The liquid in Uranus's mantle is so hot and under so much pressure that it may be able to conduct electricity. The rotation of the planet would then generate an electric current.
Uranus's magnetic field is different from most of the other planets. Uranus's magnetic field is tilted 59¬° from the planet's axis. Also, Uranus's magnetic axis does not pass through the planet's center.
